Beijing:

The Chinese government approved a project to build the first underwater high-speed train route in the country, a line will link Ningbo, a port city south of Shanghai, to Zhoushan, a archipelago off the east coast, announced CNN.

The proposed submarine tunnel will be part of the 77 km Yong-Zhou Railway plan to boost tourism and create a two-hour commute zone in Zhejiang Province.

Mentioned for the first time in a government transport plan in 2005, the feasibility study of the Yong-Zhou railway plan was approved by Beijing in November

On 77 km of tracks 70.92 km of tracks will be built recently, including a 16.2 km underwater section.

The new road will transport travelers from Hangzhou – the capital of Zhejiang – to Zhoushan in 80 minutes.

The journey currently takes about 4.5 hours by bus or 2.5 hours by personal vehicle.

Seven stations are planned for the entire trip, including four new and three refitted.

At a record price of 25.2 billion yuan (US $ 3 billion), the project is expected to begin next year and end in 2025.
