Citing "Anarchy", AAP seeks to control the Delhi Police

The Delhi Assembly on Monday pbaded a resolution demanding that the Delhi police be placed under the control of the elected government, saying that the deterioration of the law enforcement situation had plunged the nation's capital to the brink of anarchy. The Minister of the Interior of Delhi, Satyendar Jain, proposed the resolution during the extraordinary session of a day gathered to discuss the attack on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at the Secretariat and the heckling during the inauguration of the Signature Bridge.

Addressing the House, Kejriwal said The Prime Minister should resign if he can not protect the chief minister of the nation's capital. "He's avenging his defeat in Delhi," said the CM. Other AAP MPs who spoke on the issue pointed out that if a physical injury was caused to Kejriwal, the BJP Government and the Prime Minister would be held responsible. Kejriwal also blamed the BJP for the attack, saying the party was not sure because of the growing popularity of the PAA among the population.

"The Minister of the Interior, Rajnath Singh, called me the day of the attack. I clearly told him that he (will) know the attacker better because they sent him after all, "he said. The resolution stated that because of the "subversive and disruptive" instructions of the Center to the Delhi Police through the Lieutenant Governor, the elected government was not able to obtain the support of the Delhi police, even to enforce laws such as the law on the maintenance of essential services (ESMA).

As an immediate measure, the resolution called for the Center to transfer certain powers to the Government of Delhi so that it could implement measures such as ESMA by the police. Jain said that the government had recently invoked ESMA to ensure the operation of DTC services, but that the police had done nothing to enforce the law. "Delhi has earned the dubious distinction of being the crime capital of India. Even the CM can be attacked in his own office. Reacting to the resolution, the Delhi police, in a statement, said:" It is inaccurate to say that the Delhi Police does not support the Delhi Government on the implementation of ESMA … Whenever such a report has been received, the necessary legal proceedings have been initiated. The meeting was extended for one day to discuss the issue of the name of the elector being suppressed.
