DENVER:

A Colorado jogger fought a mountain lion in the foothills of Horsetooth Mountain, suffering serious bites before killing the wild animal in self-defense, according to authorities.

A juvenile mountain cub attacked it from behind by biting it and scratching it on a trail on the West Ridge, 66 miles northwest of Denver. The face, back, legs and arms of the man, said Monday in a joint statement Monday the Department of Natural Resources Larimer County and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

It was not revealed how the jogger killed the animal, and no one was killed. CPW or Larimer DNR was available for comment early Tuesday.

The runner was able to visit a local hospital, officials said.

The body of the animal was found near the trail and the jogger's belongings were dropped and taken to a CPW lab for necropsy, officials said.

"The rider did everything he could to save his life," said Mark Leslie, CPW's Northeast Regional Director. "In case of lions attack, you must do everything in your power to fight back, just like the man did."

Lion attacks have resulted in less than 20 deaths in the United States in the last 100 years. Sixteen known attacks have occurred in Colorado since 1990, officials said.

"Mountain lion attacks are not common in Colorado and it is unfortunate that the lion's hunting instincts were triggered by the runner," said Ty Petersburg, wildlife officer for the region. CPW in a statement. "It could have had a very different result."
