Despite a promotional blitz, Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika had a slow start at the box office on Friday with a crore estimated at Rs. 8.75. The commercial aggregator Box Office India reported that the film's collections came mainly from multiplexes, the film failing to obtain traces on a single screen. Manikarnika, also starring Ankita Lokhande, Danny Dengzopa, Atul Kulkarni and Jisshu Sengupta, has been released on more than 3,000 screens.

The other release of the week, Thackeray, has allowed Raka to win 6 crore, with his marathi version bringing the moolah. The film Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Amrita Rao generated about 2.75-3 million crore in Hindi, its activity being limited mainly to Mumbai. As Saturday is Republic Day, Manikarnika's collections are set to increase. However, given the budget of the film (estimated at 90 million rupees), the film must double its collection of the first day Saturday and a new increase Sunday. The film has received mixed reviews and much will now depend on word of mouth.
Kangana directed Manikarnika and starred in the role of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi. The film was to be directed by Krish who left it halfway. Kangana took over the direction of the film even as the actor Sonu Sood withdrew from the film. There was a protest against the Karni Sena film to which Kangana had responded saying that she was going to destroy "each of them" if she was harbaded.
Regarding a film presented by an actress, Manikarnika is the fifth best opener. Sonam Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor's Veere Di Wedding rank first with a gain of over Rs 10.4 million on the first day. The other films on the list are Tanu Weds Manu Returns of Kangana (8.61 crore), Mary Kom of Priyanka Chopra (crore of 8.32) and Ragini MMS 2 of Sunny Leone (crore of 7.93 crore).
