Bengali actor and singer Ruma Guha Thakurta died of old-age ailments at his Kolkata home on Monday morning, reported PTI. She was 84 years old. Guha Thakurta is known for her roles in such films as Ganga, Balika Badhu and 36 Chowringhee Lane .

Guha Thakurta, who was the niece of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, began her acting career in 1944, starring the film Awara Chakravarty Jwar Bhata. She was also known for her illustrious career as a backing singer. She began her career as a dancer and moved to Mumbai, where she married singer Kishore Kumar in the early 1950s. Guha Thakurta founded in 1958 a troupe of singing and dancing called Calcutta Youth Choir . She is survived by two sons and one daughter. One of his sons, Amit Kumar, is a Bollywood singer and songwriter.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee extended her condolences to the family. "Saddened by the pbading of Ruma Guha Thakurta," said Banerjee. "We will always remember his contribution to film and music. My condolences to his family and his admirers.
