Bhubaneswar, October 22

The price of diesel being higher than that of gasoline for the third consecutive day in the state, the government of Odisha asked Monday at the Center to clarify why the base price of diesel was higher.

Odisha Finance Minister SB Behera blamed the government's "faulty" policy on the diesel price anomaly.

A liter of diesel costs 80.40 rupees in Bhubaneswar on Monday, while the price of gasoline remained at 80.27 rupees, a difference of 13 pesetas.

The situation is considered the first of its kind in the country.

Blaming the Center for the fluctuation of the diesel base price, Behera targeted the state-owned oil and gas minister, Dharmendra Pradhan. "The Minister of the Union (Pradhan) misled the country and the state," said Behera.

Mr Behera said that the base price of diesel was almost Rs 5.13 higher than that of gasoline. Since the day the NDA came to power, the fees have been changed and the tax has been increased by almost 330% over the UPA period.

"The basic price of gasoline was 48,89 Rs and 44,72 Rs for diesel in 2014. However, in 2018, the base price of gasoline is in 43.08 Rs against 48.21 Rs for diesel, "he said.

The opposition BJP dismissed Behera's allegations and asked the state government to reduce VAT on diesel, which ultimately will help reduce the price.

"The state government applies a VAT of 22.50 rupees on every liter of diesel sold in the state.It should reduce VAT," said BJP spokesman, Golak Mohapatra.

While the price of diesel is 77.24 rupees per liter in neighboring West Bengal, it also costs 80.53 rupees to Jaleswar in the district of Odisha Balasore, just 5 km away.

Utkal Petroleum Dealers Association said it would soon submit a memorandum to the government of Odisha requesting a reduction in VAT on diesel.

"We are preparing a memorandum to be submitted to Odisha's finance minister Most of our fuel pumps on the national roads are unusable, the interstate vehicles buying fuel from other states" said the secretary general of the badociation, Sanjay Lath.

The price of diesel remained high in Odisha, the state government charging 26% VAT on fuel, while other countries have different tax plates for gasoline and diesel – PTI [19659011] (function (d, s, id) {
