NEW DELHI: Sponsorship codes on e-commerce or travel websites could be substantially reduced. But a referral code generated on the Prime Minister's personal mobile app could put you face to face with the Prime Minister himself!

A new feature of the Narendra Modi Application (NaMO) allows anyone making a micro-donation – from 5 to 1,000 rupees – to the BJP to obtain a referral code. The donor can then send this code to his contacts by email, SMS or WhatsApp. "If 100 people use this referral code or the link sent to donate funds through the app, the motivator might have the chance to meet the prime minister," said a BJP leader at ET.

The BJP leader, quoted above, stated that this decision was the party's latest attempt to "increase contacts" between the prime minister and the people. The BJP had recently introduced the micro-donation feature on the NaMO application.

The meeting with the prime minister could involve a group of such "active influencers" who each encouraged a hundred people to donate to the BJP via the NaMO mobile app, party leaders told ET . Anyone who can donate at least 10 people with the help of his referral code will get free NaMO products, such as t-shirts or coffee mugs, available on the app.

The interest in meeting Modi could increase donations for the BJP before the 2019 general election, given the popularity of the prime minister among the mbades, party leaders said. They cited an "encouraging response" to the micro-donation exercise up to now through the application – this option was previously available on the BJP website. "The average amount given by one person is 300 to 400 rupees. Our experience shows that most people have either given 100 or 1,000 Rs, "said a party official.

AND was the first to report on September 18th that NaMo merchandise was on sale on the mobile application and that a micro-donation option was being added.
