CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government decided Monday to recommend to the Center the death penalty for drug traffickers and traffickers. The move follows a huge surge of deaths across the state allegedly due to a drug overdose.

At a meeting chaired by Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, the Punjab cabinet decided to send an official recommendation to the Center as soon as possible to amend the legislation in question. Punjab may be the first state in the country to make such a recommendation.

The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act provides for the death penalty for repeat offenders, but the Punjab government wants this penalty to be imposed on all drug traffickers and traffickers.

The cabinet also decided to form a special task force to monitor daily action against the threat of drugs. It was suggested at the meeting that cases be recorded in all these deaths in order to identify risk factors, including the provision of non-essential drugs and mixing drugs with other deadly substances.
