THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Deputy Commissioner of Police, B Harikumar, accused of murdering a young man, was found hanged on Tuesday at his home in Veyilore, near Kallambalam, on the outskirts of the city. He was accused of pushing Sbad Kumar (32) in front of a vehicle following a roadside fight in Kodungavila, Neyyattinkara, on the evening of 5 November.

A few hours later, the friend and the second accused of Harikumar in the Binu case went to the headquarters of the crime division and surrendered with his driver Ramesh.

Police stated that Harikumar's mother-in-law, Lalithabai, saw the body in the washroom behind his home around 10 am The house was locked for a week after Harikumar's wife and son moved in with his older brother Madhavan's family to Kallara as a result of the case. Lalithabai had gone to feed two family pet dogs when she noticed that the door of the outhouse was open.

Seeing Harikumar hanging on a noose in dhoti, she alerted her son and other people. The police found a suicide note in the body that would only have asked his family to take care of his son.

The DSP had started an argument with Sbad on the night of November 5, about a parking dispute. The fight took place when the DSP left, after visiting his friend Binu, who lived nearby. Sbad had parked his car in front of Harikumar's vehicle, after which the DSP badaulted Sbad and threw him in front of a vehicle at high speed. Sbad succumbed to injury a few hours later and Harikumar fled with his friend.

An investigation by the Crime Branch was underway under the supervision of IG Sreejith. A local court was scheduled to hear Harikumar's application for bail on Wednesday and the investigation team filed a report opposing it. The team arrested a resort owner in Thripparappu, Tamil Nadu, Ratheesh, and Binu's son Aneesh Krishna, who were accused of helping the accused flee.

The body was handed over to the family Tuesday night at the end of an investigation and post mortem examination. The funeral was held around 9 pm Harikumar leaves behind his wife Lekha and his son Athul, a student. He had another son, Akhil, who succumbed to cancer about 10 years ago.
