Karl Otto Lagerfeld, one of the most renowned and influential names in the fashion industry, died Tuesday. He was 85 years old. According to a report by the French magazine Closer, the German designer died as a result of a long illness.
Creative director of the luxury French couture house Chanel, Lagerfeld took over this prestigious fashion house in 1983, more than ten years after Coco Chanel had breathed his last breath. Lagerfeld was also the creative director of Fendi, the famous Italian fashion house specializing in fur and leather goods, in addition to managing his own fashion brand.
Lagerfeld's health worried his fans after the couturier missed the Chanel Haute Couture Spring / Summer 2019 show in January earlier this year.
According to a report in Harpers Bazaar, the designer would have continued to work even though he was struggling with an illness. According to the report, he "gave instructions to his team" regarding the Fendi Fall / Winter 2019 show scheduled for Thursday at Milan Fashion Week.
