This is a collaboration that began with Shyam Benegal's Nishant and, 44 years later, Shabana Azmi remembers veteran theater and film guru Girish Karnad as a true intellect whose life can not be described in a single sound byte.
Azmi Saturday finally announced his working relationship with Karnad, who died at the age of 81 in his residence in Bengaluru after a long illness on June 10th.

"Few people know that the first time Shyam Benegal turned Ankur, it was a very long movie. Shyam is attached to Girish to help edit the story. That's where I heard about Girish for the first time. Azmi recalled that when Karnad headed the Indian Institute of Film and Television (FTII), he showed great maturity in running the student strike led by actor Naseeruddin Shah.

"It was a mandate difficult because the students were on strike. and very hostile. But Girish treated him with a lot of maturity and compbadion. "But it's not for Girish's remarkable merit that it allowed him to recommend Naseer to Shyam for a very important role in Nishant – his first break in movies that launched his career and established him as a good actor, a person inferior to Girish could have taken revenge.
