A feud between two neighboring apartments sparked a chain reaction that resulted in the shooting death of a firefighter in Long Beach, California on Monday, prosecutors said.

Thomas Man Kim was charged with murder after the authorities claimed that the 77-year-old boy had fired an explosive device into his apartment while trying to kill the woman who lived in the unit above his own. The attempt failed, but the device set off a fire that brought the Long Beach Fire Department to the scene just before 4 am Monday.

Capt. Dave Rosa, 45, a 17-year-old veteran, was shot dead after responding to the scene at Covenant Manor, a seniors' facility in Long Beach, officials said. Another firefighter and an unrelated man who lived in the building sustained nonfatal injuries.

Rosa was married and had two sons, aged 16 and 25.

Kim is held without bail at the USC Medical Center because of medical problems, which has delayed a hearing in court on Wednesday, according to ABC's Los Angeles, KABC.
