PUNE: Several fires have been ravaged by a major fire that devastated a slum on the outskirts of Shivaji Nagar in the suburbs of Pune on Wednesday without any casualties, officials said.

The fire broke out in the Patil Estate slum, near the old Pune-Mumbai road, around 1 pm, said firefighters, adding that the fire was 39; was rapidly spread as a result of the explosion of LPG bottles.

People rushed to safety while the fire was raging, they said.

Authorities said the road was closed to vehicles for a few hours due to the fire.

"The fire quickly spread because of the explosion of LPG cylinders.More than 60 barracks were destroyed in the fire.No casualties were to deplore while people rushed to a secure area, "said a fire chief.

The flames were completely extinguished after more than two hours with the aid of 30 firewalls, he said, adding that the cooling system was in place.

The exact cause of the incident is not known immediately.
