The star stars Sanya Malhotra and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead roles. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was also screened at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival in February. Meanwhile, Rakeysh Prime Minister Omprakash Mehra, Mere Pyare, also published this week.
Before deciding which movie to watch this weekend, here are the reasons why Photograph is a good watch:
1. Ritesh Batra (Director)
Director Ritesh Batra has already presented Indian filmmakers with the critically acclaimed movie, The Lunchbox, starring Nimrat Kaur, Irrfan Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The director has been appreciated many times for drawing credible characters and not dramatizing his films unnecessarily. He is known for his understanding of topics, like the dabbawallahs of Mumbai in The Lunchbox. After the critically acclaimed movie The Lunchbox, movie buffs can look forward to another Batra in Photographic masterpiece.
2. Cast
Sanya Malhotra and Nawazuddin Siddiqui are the stars of Photograph's cast, which also features actors such as Sachin Khedekar, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Robin Das, Jim Sarbh, Denzil Smith and Farrukh Jaffar. While Sanya has proven herself with films like Dangal and Pataakha, Nawaz's perfection in his craft is known to all. The audience can therefore expect a movie with punchy performances.
3. Plot
After watching the Trailer of Photograph, you can badume that this is an ordinary Bollywood story rich-girl-meets-poor-guy, but it's more than that. Street photographer Rafi aka Nawaz clicks on photographs of tourists at the gateway to India and meets Miloni (Sanya Malhotra), CA by profession. Later, he convinces her to pretend to be his girlfriend Noori in front of her sick grandmother simply to avoid the conversations around her wedding. But ultimately, both develop a bond. Now, if it is love, friendship or something more, it makes it an interesting story.
4. Early Critics
Photograph had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Ritesh Batra's film received a warm response from film critics. International publications have described the film as discreet and effective. The Hollywood Reporter described him as "discreet charmer" and Variety, "beautiful film". "Nobody should go to see a Batra movie while waiting for a firework, but for all those who appreciate his sober style, Photograph is a satisfying and irreproachable novel," reads in a section of the THR review.
5. Unusual Coupling
Nawazuddin Siddiqui is an unconventional Bollywood hero who has played a variety of characters in the movies but has not been much of a fiction on the big screen. In addition, Sanya Malhotra, besides Badhaai Ho, has been portrayed in such roles as fiery wrestler Babita in Dangal and sturdy Chhutki in Pataakha. The fact that the two characters are opposed drew everyone's attention. Twitterati enjoyed their equation in the movie trailer and looks forward to creating magic on the big screen.
