Four awards, including Best Cinematography, will be presented during commercials

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present four Oscars – for cinematography, editing, make-up and hair styling and for short films – during the 91st Academy Awards break on [ Variety reported. The speeches of the winners of these categories will be broadcast later. The live broadcast of the ceremony on Oscar.com will however display the real-time awards ceremony. (The livestream is only available on US markets.)

Academy President John Bailey announced that the categories would not appear in the broadcast in an email to members of the Academy Monday, declared Variety . "Oscar viewing models are evolving rapidly in our current multimedia world, and our show must also evolve to continue to promote motion pictures to a global audience," Bailey said. "It's been our main mission since we were founded 91 years ago – and it's the same today."

At a recent luncheon to honor the nominees, potential winners would have been informed that they would have only 90 seconds to spare.

The Academy had announced in 2018 that the televised broadcast of the 2019 ceremony would be reduced to three hours, as a result of the decline in the television audience (hearing of the ceremony of 2018 would have reached its lowest level). The Academy informed its members at the time that some of the 24 awards would be handed out during commercial breaks, but the categories were not yet identified. The Academy had also announced the category "Best Popular Film", but its implementation has been postponed as a result of many criticisms.

The Academy's decision was widely criticized on Twitter, especially by filmmakers and journalists. Guillermo del Toro, who won Best Director and Best Film last year for The Shape of Water, emphasized that "cinematography and editing are at the heart of the art".

Hey, @ The Academy how do you think this moment has arrived? pic.twitter.com/UGg8TxzCPK

In the history of CINEMA, the masterpieces have existed without sound, without sound, without color history, without actors and without music. No film has ever existed without CINEMAtography and without editing.

– Alfonso Cuaron (@alfonsocuaron) February 12, 2019

If you allow me, I do not pretend to suggest the categories to cut during the Oscars show but – Cinematography and editing are at the heart of our job. They are not inherited from a theatrical or literary tradition: it is the cinema itself.

– Guillermo del Toro (@RealGDT) February 12, 2019

The Academy removes the cinematography, editing and make-up of the TV show?
It's a fundamentally stupid decision, I will not even bother to try to be clever.
It's too silly for words.

The Screen Actors Guild can put an end to the bulk of this scam at the Oscars if it shows solidarity with the branches that make the subject of commercial breaks.

There is not enough attention given to all the people "below the line" who make the movies occur (hence the reason I wanted to start my podcast) The #Oscars should celebrate their work, not relegate them to a commercial break. https://t.co/2HBpqEbU4I

The Oscars are supposed to be a celebration of the best of the movie. Now, they will not even care to broadcast the best of cinematography and editing, two of the most important elements of cinema.

This season of awards is a joke. https://t.co/28C5GdRd0i

a movie. Is. do not. to exist. without. cinematography. Staggering this from the live broadcast of the Oscars is shameful. All persons who will participate in the broadcast of this year's Oscar to @TheAcademy must be fired.
They obviously do not like cinema. pic.twitter.com/Tivpwg5kUA

A Twitter user wondered if business factors had influenced the Academy's decision. Citing figures from the Mojo Box Office, he said the cumulative film collections of these four categories were the lowest of the technical categories (excluding awards for theater, director, screenplay and best picture).

Wondering why the Oscars cut cinematography, film editing, and make-up / hairstyle for the ceremony? Well, they also happen to be the three least profitable technology categories this year, soooo: https://t.co/EuRRSSTfhn#Oscars AcademyAwards #PresentAll24 pic.twitter .com / O0LM1I9Goe

An American journalist-filmmaker also pointed out that John Bailey is a filmmaker. American Gigolo (1980), The Big Chill (1983) and When in Rome (2010)

John Bailey is himself a filmmaker! What a stupid decision.

– Bilge Ebiri (@BilgeEbiri) On February 11, 2019

Bailey was inspired by Vittorio Storaro as chief operator. His credits include "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" and "Groundhog Day", and he writes a blog for the American Society of Cinematographers. This decision is insulting and wrong. @TheAcademy https://t.co/MsHJuTwZlm[19459005HERH:ManohlaDarkness(@ManohlaDargis) 11 February 2019
