Warning! SPOILERS coming for Game of Thrones season 8, episode 3 and trailer episode 4.
Game of Thrones season 8, episode 3 "The Long Night" sees Jon and Daenerys engage the king of the night battle while the three ride their dragons – but what happens to Jon's dragon, Rhaegal? We already knew that the third episode of the last season of the HBO series would involve a huge battle, but episode 3 exceeds expectations, describing a battle of unprecedented scale on television.
Being the last season of Game of Thrones season 8 would still include some of the most shocking moments of the series. Already this season, Game of Thrones has surprised viewers, but "The Long Night" is where these surprises turn into horror. Now that the king of the night is attacking Winterfell, no one is safe. This includes the two living dragons – Drogon and Rhaegal. They are essential to the plan to defeat the King of Darkness, but taking part in this fight also puts them in danger of joining their brother, Viserion, in his service of the undead.

In Game Of Thrones Season 8 "The Long Night", Daenerys Rides Drogon In Combat While Jon is at the top of Rhaegal. When they spot the Night King riding Viserion, the undead ice dragon, they attack. The dragons are tearing themselves up when the king of the night asks Viserion to try and snatch Jon from Rhaegal's back. Daenerys and Drogon repulsed him, knocking down the king of Viserion's night and collapsing to the ground. Viserion then flew away, but Rhaegal was seriously injured in the fight and crashed, knocking Jon off the back. And although it seems that Rhaegal could have died of these wounds (he does not reappear in the episode), the preview before next week Game of Thrones confirms that Jon's dragon survives . A distinctly green dragon flies over the screen over one of Daenerys' ships at the mark: 19 seconds, while Sansa watches two dragons fly over Winterfell at: 22 in the trailer.
This was during the previous Game of Thrones. Episode "A knight of the seven kingdoms" in which Jon rides a dragon for the first time, rides on the back of Rhaegal and flies north of The Wall with Daenerys and Drogon. The episode mostly plays the stage for laughter (Jon almost falling from Rhaegal), using it to reinforce Jon's and Daenerys' romance rather than letting him play a role in the big revelation that Jon is a Targaryen, but it's still an important moment. And of course, with Jon having already ridden Rhaegal, it became pretty obvious that Jon would ride him to fight alongside Daenerys and Drogon during the Great War.
In the end, Drogon and Rhaegal do not make a difference many thought they would be. Drogon is almost killed by a swarm of soul and his dragon fire has no effect on the Night King. In fact, the most effective dragon at "The Long Night" is Viserion, ridding Rhaegal early and devastating the walls of Winterfell with its blue flames. If the king of the night had not been killed when he was, you'd better believe that Viserion would have roasted Jon alive too. But when the king of the night dies, all those whom he has resurrected and beaten for him also fall dead, including Viserion.
The battle against the king of the night and his army of the dead is now over, those who have survived "The Long Night" will turn their attention to the south. Game of Thrones is now halfway to its last season and there are still two dragons alive. Drogon and Rhaegal will certainly need some time to recover, but the dragons will certainly have an important role to play in the coming war against Cersei. Whether or not they survive at this battle only time will tell. ] Game of Thrones Season 8 continues on Sunday, May 5 at 9 pm on HBO.
