Google honors Bach with the first Doodle powered by the AI

To create the Doodle powered by AI, the teams first created a ML model called Coconet, and then customized it to match Bach's musical style.

Coconet can be used in a wide range of musical tasks, such as harmonizing melodies, creating smooth transitions between disconnected music fragments and composition from scratch.

The team then trained Coconet with 306 harmonizations to Bach's chorale. His choirs always have four voices: each carries his own melodic line, creating a rich harmonic progression when played together.

In addition, to ensure that users around the world can use Doodle, the teams used PAIR's TensorFlow.js, which allows ML to run entirely in an Internet browser.

The ML model can also be used on Google's new tensor processing units, in cases where someone's computer or device might not support TensorFlow.js.

"The Doodle is the first to use TPUs this way," said Hannah-Murphy.
