Gully Boy Movie Review: An Extraordinary Performance by Ranveer Singh

But the film has several layers: Murad's transition to adulthood, his discovery, and his understanding of who he really is and what he represents. It's about finding one's expression, here, through poetry and rap. It's also a beautiful love story, and on some level it's a love letter to Mumbai – a city where the haves and the have-nots live in a kind of approximate peace , where skyscrapers overlook the slums, where you can be poor while remaining honest and where dreams come true often.

What makes the strength of these different aspects essentially consists of two things: an extraordinary performance of Ranveer Singh as Murad. And the music and the lyrics, which have as much sensations as the story and the performances.

In his latest film Dil Dhadakne Do Zoya exploited a quieter and more thoughtful side of Ranveer. They rely on that in Gully Boy. Much of his performance in this film is played on his face in his expressions. There are wandering moments that bristle with honesty. He even gets the little things superbly; it is clear that he is an extremely intuitive and insightful actor.

The songs are powerful and loaded with powerful words that resonate particularly in their respective situations. Murad, who has a violent father, talks about the plight of his mother, the search for freedom, the realization of his dreams and the importance of authenticity.

In fact, the authentic word is often quoted in the film. . Rappers have an integrity and authenticity that is important to them and they are very proud to repeat it over and over again. This is also the word I would use to describe the story and the making of films. It is a world in which writers are clearly anchored. It is not an external vision of these people, their lives and their homes; It is a very observed portrait, a lived world and that is why he never feels wrong. The dialogue, the jargon, the typing lines, they are real. But much of this merit must be shared with the technical team that seamlessly creates such an immersive cinematic experience.

One of the things I've most enjoyed in Gully Boy is the love story between Murad and Safeena, the character played by Alia Bhatt. From their very first moments on the screen – marked by a beautiful scene without words in a BEST bus – it becomes clear that they have a beautiful understanding that results from a life together. Safeena is a medical student and belongs to a conservative Muslim family. but Zoya and his co-author Reema Kagti wrote such a brave character in Safeena. She likes Murad; it has marked its territory and you do not want to fight it. Alia is great in the role.

The same goes for the rest of the cast, including Vijay Verma as a friend, Murad's auto mechanic Moeen, Vijay Raaz for his brutal father, and Amruta Subhash for his long-suffering mother. The young actor named Siddhant Chaturvedi plays MC Sher, the rapper who takes Muradunder under his wing, and presents him to the world of rap battles. He has a charming presence and leaves a lasting impression.

Less convincing is a secondary plot featuring the character of Kalki Koechlin, Sky, a wealthy musician back in the United States who is keenly interested in Murad's music. Aside from a few of those plot points that I was not entirely convinced, my only problem with the movie is its length. Perhaps because there are so many things on the screen and filmmakers bother to link the story of each character, the film is much too long. It's almost half past two, and it's too long for a film whose basic narrative – the story of the oppressed – is in fact quite predictable.

But these little troubles aside, I think Gully Boy is one of Zoya Akhtar's strongest films; In fact, for me, it ranks well with his first extraordinary film, Luck By Chance. I enjoyed the world that she creates here, the characters that inhabit this world and the pace that she puts in it.

Without openly drawing attention to her, she makes a strong feminist statement in the character of Safeena, making some harsh observations about the minorities and also about the world in which we live and the place he occupies for those who have less means. It's a lot to do in a film that works on the surface as an extremely entertaining musical drama. I left with an appreciation of Indian hip-hop, which, frankly, I knew nothing until now.

I'm leaving with Gully Boy with four out of five. I loved this movie seen from the inside of my bones.
