Celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Republic began on Saturday when the ceremonial parade took place in the majestic Rajpath with southern Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa present as the main guest, in a context of unprecedented security deployment in New Delhi . Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the martyrs by laying a wreath on Amar Jawan Jyoti in the presence of Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the three heads of service.

Later, Prime Minister Modi, dressed in his traditional kurta pajamas and Nehru brand jacket, reached Rajpath and received President Ram Nath Kovind and President Ramaphosa's main guest.

At the deployment of the tricolor flag, the group plays the national anthem with a salute of 21 shots fired in the background. Many senior officials, including Interior Minister Rajnath Singh, Foreign Affairs Ministers Sushma Swaraj, Manmohan Singh and Deve Gowda, as well as Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Ghulam Nabi Azad, as well as Head of Government of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, were present. The general theme of this year's Republic Day celebrations is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi and many of the country's thematic paintings are aligned for the occasion.

Officials said that Ramaphosa was the second South African president, after Nelson Mandela, to attend the big event as the main guest. Four veterans of the National Indian Army (INA), over 90 years old, took part in the parade, among the many firsts of the Day of the Republic parade.
