HIV and AIDS cases down: officer

Rohini, Udupi district health and family officer, said on Thursday that growing awareness and continued efforts by the health department are reducing the number of HIV / AIDS cases in the district.

Speaking to reporters, Dr. Rohini said that Udupi was in 27th place in the state in terms of the percentage of HIV-positive cases detected among general clients in 2017 -18, with 0.53%.

He was in the 28th place in the district percent of HIV-positive cases detected in pregnant women for 2017-18, with 0.02%.

From 2007-08 to October 2018, the number of people on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the district was 3,695. This included 1,610 adult men, 1,870 adult women, 112 children, and 95 girls.

In the district HIV testing and counseling services of the National AIDS Control Program, the number of people living with HIV has declined over the last seven years.

The number of HIV-positive people among general clients was 1,021 in 2011-12. It increased to 283 in 2017-2018 and 210 until October 2018.

The number of HIV-positive pregnant women in the district increased from 39 in 2011-12 to 10 in 2017-18. , and remained in place until October 2018. There were 13 integrated counseling and testing centers in the district. There were HIV testing centers in all primary health centers in the district.

Eligible HIV-positive people could benefit from free antiretroviral therapy at the Government District Hospital and the ART Center of the Taluk Government Hospital in Kundapur.

To raise awareness of HIV / AIDS, Red Ribbon clubs were established in 35 district colleges. HIV / AIDS awareness was being created in secondary schools as part of the adolescent education program. World AIDS Day will be held Saturday at Brahmavar's pre-university SMS high school, said Dr Rohini.
