The Academy of Arts and Sciences of Cinema is under fire as it continues to stumble toward the ceremony of Oscars later this month. Professionals from various corners of Hollywood – directors, actors, writers, etc. – denounced the Academy's decision to award the winners of the four categories during the commercial breaks, then broadcast a truncated summary of these awards later in the television broadcast.
Oscar Winners Guillermo del Toro Alfonso Cuaron Russell Crowe and organizations such as the American Society of Cinematographs complained that the Oscars won the title essential categories such as cinematography and editing during the show.
Winners of the Best Photography, Best Editing, Best Live Short, Best Makeup and Hairstyling Prizes will be announced in the Dolby Theater during commercial breaks and their acceptance speeches will be integrated at the ceremony later. (The President of the Academy John Bailey states that these awards will be broadcast live on Oscar.com.) If the plan is valid, four different categories will be presented off camera at the Oscars of 2020, with a different rotation each year. .
This is a decision of monumental stupidity, which was made in part for the ceremony to proceed more quickly than in previous years. The American The President of the Society of Cinematographers Kees van Oostrum issued a communique to group members earlier this week, which read in part as follows:
" After receiving many comments on this from the members of the CSA, I speak for many of them saying that this decision was very unfortunate. We consider filmmaking to be a collaborative effort where the responsibilities of the director, director of photography, editor and other trades often overlap. This decision could be seen as a separation and division of this creative process, minimizing our fundamental creative contributions. The Academy is an important institution that represents our art in the eyes of the world. Since its creation 91 years ago, the Oscars have rewarded the talent, know-how and contributions of cinematographers to the creative process, but we can not tolerate this decision without protesting.
The branch volunteered to be one of the categories presented this year during commercial breaks. Even if this is true, the Academy is fighting a losing battle to increase the number of spectators in the series. To relegate these categories to the status of commercials is insulting and goes against the purpose of the Oscars: to honor filmmakers on the world stage.
This year's Oscars ceremony has been fraught with errors from the beginning – and the most embarrbading about it is that most of its problems were completely preventable. First of all, there was the whole debacle of the "Popular Oscars", which was quickly revived. Then came Kevin Hart host of the fiasco, while the Academy and Hart seemed hilariously unprepared to answer a series of questions about Hart's old tweets. This ended when the actor completely moved away from the ceremony and the Oscars will be held without a host for the first time in 30 years. Then there was a hubbub concerning only two of the five contenders for the best original song performed, which was and eventually came back;
Alfonso Cuaron, whose film is nominated for ten Oscars, recently lamented the competitive climate of the awards season in an interview with Deadline:
. "This industry has turned everything into something more vicious; or even very much. What's sad is that it almost looks like a projection of how political campaigns are today. Rather than giving a political vision to politicians, it is a question of throwing earth at the opponent. So rather than strengthening values - and I'm not talking about moral values, but the artistic merits of a film and the influence it can have – it's about trying to overthrow others. I find that very sad. And I hope it's a way – though I'm not sure – that it can be solved by the Academy. I do not know how.
If the Academy fails to even prepare enough to hold a consistent Academy Awards ceremony, I doubt very much that they can do anything to regulate the tone of the awards season.
The Oscars will air on ABC (whose parent company, Disney, has no film nominated in any of the four categories presented during the publicity) on on February 24. , 2019 .
