Huawei has defeated Apple to become the second largest smartphone vendor in the world for the second straight quarter. According to the latest data from IDC, Huawei shipped more smartphones than Apple during the third quarter of 2018. The data highlights how the Chinese smartphone maker is gaining ground in the competitive smartphone market.
Huawei beat Apple for the first time during the second quarter of 2018 and has retained the place by shipping more phones than Apple. The data shows Huawei shipped a total of 52 million smartphones during the third quarter while Apple managed to ship only 46.9 million iPhone. The Chinese smartphone maker registered nearly 33 percent growth in its shipments over the same period last year and is now aiming to dethrone Samsung as the market leader.
At the end of the third quarter, Huawei had a market share of 14.6 percent, which was marginally down from 15.9 percent in the last quarter. “From a product perspective, its P-series and recent update to its Mate-series are keeping it as competitive as ever at the top of the market. And its Honor brand, which is primarily marketed toward a younger audience and online sales, has continued to do well in many markets,” IDC said in a statement.
The report notes that Samsung shipped a total of 72.2 million smartphones during the third quarter to achieve a market share of 20.3 percent. For Samsung, its market share contracted by 13.4 percent during the same period last year. “Samsung’s bigger challenge is the ground they are losing at the mid-range and low-end. Recent announcements of revamping the product portfolio to bring new features and awareness to non-flagship models could possibly help this slide,” IDC said in its released statement.
Earlier today, Apple announced that it shipped 46.9 million iPhone during the third quarter, which was flat compared to the same period last year. Apple now has a market share of 13.2 percent but it could increase next quarter, driven by sales of new models like the iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. Xiaomi and Oppo rounded up the top five list with a market share of 9.7 percent and 8.4 percent respectively.

According to IDC, Xiaomi shipped a total of 34.3 million smartphones during the third quarter, a growth of 21.2 percent over the same period last year. Oppo shipped 29.9 million smartphones but its market share saw a decline of 2.1 percent over previous year. The smartphone industry saw a year-over-year decline of 6 percent with total smartphone shipments reaching 355.2 million units. IDC believes that the smartphone industry will return to growth in 2019.
