KOLKATA: East Bengal became the (U-19) IFA Shield champion, beating Mohun Bagan 4-2 in the tie-break after the match was blocked 1-1 in regulation and extensions at Barasat stadium on Thursday.

After a first sterile period, Sourav Das placed Mohun Bagan in the lead in the 47th minute. But East Bengal equalized in the 84th minute when Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Asanja Daimary failed to face longtime goalkeeper Dip Saha.

Mohun Bagan coach Jo Paul Anchery replaced Daimary with Avijit Debnath just at the start of the tie-break. However, Mohun Bagan missed the first two shots, giving the advantage to East Bengal.

Didwm Hazowary was out of bounds and Lalthan Khuma saw his shot saved by the East Bengal goalkeeper while Debanna Chakraborty and Subha Ghosh were on target.

East Bengal – who managed to save Subhanil Ghosh saved by Avijit – was scored by captain Jhantu Prasad, Lalchhanhima, Rohulpuia and Dip Saha.

It was the first time that the archi's two rivals had played in the final since the centennial tournament was the focus of a meeting of under-19s in 2014- 2015. However, both teams kept their promises in the final, braving the bad weather and giving a lot of entertainment to a crowded stadium.

Played on a hot and sensual afternoon, the game had to be stopped twice in half. Yet both teams went on the offensive in search of an early ancestry.

Mohun Bagan missed an opportunity in the 21st minute when Asif Ali Molla could not properly meet Hazowary's invitation center.

Ranjan Chowdhury's East Bengal could have finished the first half with a lead also when Lalchhanhima hesitated to take a shot and allowed Bagan's keeper to avoid the danger in added time.

Bagan, however, made a perfect start after the end change when Sourav made the breakthrough. After a long period of play, the defenders of East Bengal failed to eliminate the danger and Sourav took advantage of the opportunity to get closer to the fray.

East Bengal – who ruled out an offside goal – increased their bet shortly after conceding the goal. Lalchhanhima and Jhantu almost scored goals, but Daimary denied it. However, Mohun Bagan's goalkeeper disorganized Dip's goalkeeper, leading to the equalizer with six minutes to go. It was no longer a distance shot away but Daimary let him slide by his legs into the net.

Mohun Bagan attempted to attack East Bengal with set sets but was unable to achieve the desired result. In addition, the players from one and the other teams looked tired of having gone through the 90 minutes of playing an intense football.

Anchery replaced a nervous Daimary with Avijit under the bar when the game went into the tie-breaker. But Mohun Bagan started the challenge disastrously by missing his first two shots, while East Bengal took the lead 2-0. Although Avijit managed to fend off Subhanil Ghosh, the East Bengal substitute, with a dip, it was not enough because Dip sealed the deal for the reds and gold with a perfect kick, sending the crowd into ecstasy.
