India managed to draw 1-1 against the Netherlands in their last round-robin match on Saturday to establish the final of the Hockey Champions Trophy against Australia. Mandeep Singh (47th minute) scored for India's second, while Thiery Brinkmann (55th) scored for the Netherlands, third, while both teams finished the preliminary stage with eight and seven points respectively. The Netherlands will meet Argentina's Olympic champion Sunday after Australia's 3-1 defeat to Australia to bring their score to seven as the European team. But Argentina is in fourth place because of a lower goal difference. Australia dominated the table with 10 points. The final will be a rehearsal of the 2016 edition where Australia has taken the best on India thanks to a controversial shootout. India needed at least one draw against the Dutch to keep the opponent out of the final spot. India won its second penalty corner, thanks to Dilpreet again, but a variation saw Harmanpreet pbad the ball to Varun Kumar after Sardar's injection, but Varun did not could get a strong boost that was effortlessly cleared by the Dutch goalkeeper. Although India gave three penalty corners at halftime, it did not score any points on the board for both teams. The visitors' defense was compact, very alert and again Sreejesh stood out. One of his best saves was when Jorrit Croon stole the ball from India's midfielder to launch a fast counter, beating a fleet of Indian defenders to reach their hitting circle just to find a perfect pbad to Thijs van Dam. But his shot was very well saved by Sreejesh who remained the focus of India's defense.
With a scoreless display board, the third quarter was crucial. The Netherlands dominated with the possession of the ball, making 20 entries in circles and took six shots on goal. While India had made only 12 circle entries with four shots on goal. India's back-row continued to play the structure, with a clever defense while India had better co-ordinated coordination with Sunil and Mandeep who were working in tandem, but who did not scored a goal in the third quarter
with all firearms. The efforts earned them their third penalty of the match in the first minute. Although Harmanpreet's shot rebounded on the Dutch goalkeeper, Mandeep advanced quickly to put the ball in the goal and allowed his team to take the lead 1-0 in the 47th minute. As time pbaded, Dutch fans rallied behind their home team with encouraging encouragement. Home support worked with Brinkman who achieved an extraordinary goal from the bottom line, beating Amit Rohidas' block to pbad the ball over Sreejesh and level it out.
