The contingent of 524 members includes 277 male athletes and 247 female athletes from 36 sports. Athletics will have the largest number of representatives with 52 participating members.
Rajeev Mehta, Secretary General of IOA, congratulated the players of the contingent. "I would like to wish all 524 members of the Indian contingent the best for the 18th Asian Games," he said.
He also highlighted the criteria for choosing the quota of IOA. "The contingent was selected keeping in mind the long-term vision of the AIO to prepare and encourage the most deserving athletes for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo," added Mehta.
In June, AIO submitted a provisional list to the Ministry of Sports, consisting of 2,370 athletes and officials together. However, the final list has now been reduced to 524 members, which includes the most deserving athletes who have met the qualification criteria in their respective disciplines.
At the Asian Games of Incheon 2014, the Indian contingent presented 541 athletes in 28 disciplines. Eight new sports disciplines have been added to the contingent, where the country has shown promise. These sports are karate, kurash, pencak silat, roller, sambo, sepaktakraw, triathlon and soft tennis.
The contingent will see athletes from 36 sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, bowling, canoeing (sprint), canoeing (slalom), cycling, horseback riding, fencing , gymnastics, golf, handball, hockey, judo, kabaddi, karate, kurash, pencak silat, roller skating, rowing, sailing, sambo, sepaktakraw, shooting, squash, aquatic – swimming, water sports – diving, tennis, taekwondo, triathlon , soft tennis, table tennis, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling and wushu.
