Los Angeles, February 25
A film about menstruation, which takes place in rural India and titled "Period. End of Sentence & # 39; s won the Oscar of the 91st Academy Awards in the category "documentary short film".
Award-winning director Rayka Zehtabchi directed the short film, produced by Sikhya Entertainment, of Indian producer Guneet Monga,
The film was born as part of The Pad, a project created by students at the Oakwood School in Los Angeles and their teacher, Melissa Berton.
I do not cry because I have my period or anything. I can not believe that a movie about menstruation has won an Oscar, said Zehtabchi in his thank you speech.
She nodded to Monga.
Guneet Monga – Know that you have allowed women around the world to fight for menstrual equality, she added.
In dedicating the award to his school, Berton said the project was born because his students in Los Angeles and India wanted to make a difference in human rights.
I share this award with the Feminist Majority Foundation, the entire team and the cast. I share this with teachers and students around the world – a period should end a sentence and not the education of a girl, she said.
The documentary takes place in the village of Hapur, near Delhi, where women are conducting a quiet revolution fighting the deeply stigmatized stigma of menstruation.
For generations, these women did not have access to sanitary napkins, which posed health problems and prevented girls from leaving school.
When a sanitary napkin dispenser was installed in the village, women learn to make and sell their own notepads, thus giving more power to their community. They name their brand FLY.
"WE HAVE EARNED !!! To every girl on this earth … know that you are a goddess … if the sky is listening … look at MA, we put @sikhya on the map, "tweeted Monga after the victory.
Other short documentaries nominated for categories were "Black Sheep," "End Game," & # 39; Lifeboat & # 39; and & # 39; A Night at the Garden & # 39 ;.
The interest in hygiene at the time was increased in India, which was also the subject of a mainstream film in Bollywood. "Padman", starring Akshay Kumar in the lead role in a biographical film about Arunachalam Muruganantham, who began making low-cost pillows in his village despite his ostracism. Resul Pookutty won the Oscars for "Slumdog Millionaire" in 2009. PTI
