In the beginning people thought that society was cleaning up its platform, eliminating inactive and fake accounts by the thousands.

But it turns out to be a bug. Instagram has confirmed that a problem is affecting account tracker counters for some accounts.
We are aware of a problem that is causing a change in the number of account followers for some people. We are trying to solve this problem as quickly as possible.

Insta-bug only happened a few hours after Twitter had its own problems with the Like account on tweets, which has also been resolved since.
Perhaps, just maybe, is it finally time to move away from stupid vanity metrics?
