Explanations concerning the royalties Isaignani Ilaiyarajas and the verdict of the High Court!

Isaignani Ilaiyaraja won a major victory in a long-awaited court case, with the Madras High Court ruling that only the Maestro had the right to dispose of his own compositions. Yesterday, the hearing of the two cases filed by Ilayaraja against AGI Music and the Echo Recording company were closed, the High Court having dismissed one of them and the other whose verdict had been made.

In the case concerning the Malaysian music company AGI Music, the court ruled. After observing that there was a five-year contract between the company and Ilaiyaraja and after the period of validity of this contract, the company would no longer hold the right to use his compositions. In 2013, the lawsuit against AGI Music was brought by Isaignani Ilaiyaraja s. stating that the company had acquired the rights for a period of 5 years while considering using it for 10 years. In another case that the master musician filed against Echo Recording company in 2014, Judge Anitha Sumanth, who had heard the proceedings, had handed down the sentence. According to him, Ilaiyaraja's compositions can only be exhibited in theaters and not on online music portals, radio stations or reality shows. In the 1980s, Ilaiyaraja had sold the distribution rights of his music on cbadettes, but had revealed that the company did not pay the royalties. Despite the temporary settlement of the case in 2017, the final verdict was made.

As stated by the lawyer of Ilaiyaraja, E Pradeep, there were two cases, one being that of 2013, AGI, the company claiming to have rights for 10 years. After getting approval in 2007 for a period of 5 years, they used his music even after 2012, and the court admitted that the agreement was signed between the company and Raja sir that for 5 years. With regard to the Echo case, the court ordered that Raja's music be used only for theatrical purposes and not for any other medium. Quite often, it could be seen that the legend insists that lawsuits will be brought against those who use his works without his permission. It should be noted that in 2017, Ilaiyaraja sent a legal notification to the legendary singer and his friend S P Balasubrahmanyam so that they do not interpret songs composed by him without his permission. After more than a year of cold relationships, the duo has recently moved closer and SPB performed at the concert held on June 2, the day of Ilaiyaraja's birthday.
