The brother of the New York Giants cornerback, Janoris Jenkins, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with manslaughter after finding a body Tuesday at the gambler's home in New Jersey. If he was found guilty of the crime charge, William H. Jenkins could be sentenced to a 10 to 30 year prison term.
Jenkins, 34, was reportedly arrested after being detained in Ontario County. He is awaiting his probable extradition to New Jersey, where the Bergen County authorities have described him as a "person of interest" in the case.
The body was identified as that of Roosevelt Rene, a 25-year-old music producer who is described as a friend of the Jenkins family.
Janoris Jenkins, 29, would have been to Florida, from where he has been coming since the end of last month. It is not clear how René, who produced under the name Trypps Beatz, died and an autopsy is pending by the Bergen County Medical Examiner's Office. Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reported that the police were investigating the death at Fair Lawn, NJ, at her home as a "possible strangulation / suffocation."
A worker found Rene's body in the basement, according to TMZ, and Fair Lawn Police Sgt. Brian Metzler told NJ.com that the police had been summoned at 10:22. Members of the Bergen County Attorney's Office and the Bergen County Sheriff's Office were also on the scene and Metzler added that police had never been called. A neighbor who identified with NJ.com only as Debbie said Jenkins lives at home with his brother and the website reported that investigators were combing a white Lexus sedan with Florida plates . and a Land Rover.
Jenkins, who raps under the name Rabbit, has been with the Giants since 2016. He was a second round pick by the Rams in 2012. ESPN reported that Jenkins' lawyers were advising him to stay in Florida. The Giants stated that they were aware of the report and were monitoring the situation.
William Jenkins was arrested at least seven times before, according to court records obtained by NJ.com, including in 2002 at the age of 18. He spent a total of nearly seven years behind bars with a 63-month stay that began after an arrest in 2011 for possession and sale of a controlled substance.
