The MOMO-2 rocket, developed by Interstellar Technologies, was launched in the city of Taiki in Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island. . It was supposed to reach 100 kilometers (62 miles) in space.
Television footage showed that the 10-meter (33-foot) pencil rocket only rose slightly from its firing point before falling to the ground, disappearing into a fireball. Images filmed on NHK's public television showed a charred rocket lying on the ground.
The incident caused no injury.
Interstellar Technologies president, Takahiro Inagawa, said that he thought the rocket had a problem. Saturday's failure was the second after the first launch of the rocket last July
The project was launched in 2005 by the maverick entrepreneur Takafumi Horie, the founder of the Internet service provider Livedoor , which has been joined by science journalists and other space fans with the goal of developing a small, lightweight and inexpensive rocket to send information satellites into the space.
