K 13 Movie Review: Not enough meat to hold the attention

Barath Neelakantan's first feature film, K 13, reminded me of François Ozon's swimming pool, where a medium-sized woman retreats to a picturesque French village to sweep her writer's block . And the film, which takes place mainly in his publisher's villa, revolves around an exciting story of jealousy, longing and revenge – also involving a much younger woman. K 13 also takes place mainly in an apartment of a multi-story complex and attends the mysterious drama of a young writer, who is also embarrbaded by a blockage (much like in Swimming Pool).

But unlike the Ozon adventure with two charming actresses, Charlotte Rampling and Ludivine Sagnier, Neelakantan's thriller is not at the rendezvous of performance or scenario. A good actress such as Shraddha Srinath was lost to Malarvizhi, whose latest fiction, inspired by her friend's artificial insemination plan, puts her in trouble. Her friend leaves Malarvizhi, and it is in those depressed moments that she goes to a bar one night and retrieves the Madhiyazhagan from Arulnithi. They drink several glbades together and land in his apartment, K 13 – the number corresponding to the title of the film.
When Madhiyazhagan wakes up, he finds himself strapped to a chair and Malarvizhi is dead, after having cut his wrist in what appears to be a suicide.

K 13 can be very short compared to Tamil cinema standards, at 102 minutes, but even in this case not enough meat to keep us absorbed, and the first half really sinks. The unnecessary detour with the actor Yogi Babu, who arrives with a package for K 13, remains like a sore thumb.

Moreover, while Ozon carefully tied his weak points to the climax, Neelakantan's work ended in a rather confused twist. It is not easy to master such a technique, and Ozon has succeeded after many years of realization. Neelakantan may have tried to be a little more ambitious than he could possibly have managed.
