Since debuting in 2012 with Karan Johar's year student Varun Dhawan is the only young star to have achieved a 100% success rate at box office. While Sidharth Malhotra is struggling to achieve box office success, Alia Bhatt also made a flop in Shaandaar in 2015. Varun followed the success of Student of the Year with ] Principal Hero of the Tera Hero, Sharma Ki Dulhania, Badlapur, ABCD 2, Dilwale, Dishoom, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Judwaa 2, October and Sui Dhaaga – Made in India .
After recording 11 consecutive hits, Varun Dhawan could well watch his first flop in his recent Kalank release. Director Abhishek Varman is a large budget multi-estate co-owner co-produced by Karan Johar. It is said that he is close to his heart because it was the last film on which his father, Yash Johar, had worked. The film has received largely negative criticism from critics and the film's word of mouth is also extremely negative. As a result, after being the best box office debut in 2019, the film had a big crash on Day 2 and has not been able to recover since. Despite an extended weekend of 5 days, Kalank fails to gain momentum.
Before the release of Kalank, Varun Dhawan, interacting with Mid-day, opened his box office victory. When asked if he felt the need to succeed every time his film came out, Varun replied:
Alia's only one film failed [Shaandaar, 2015]. When we discussed at that time, she said to me, "I would like this to never happen to you, but at the same time, it must happen because it will help you grow." It's not that I'm not invincible. No matter how big my star is today, I know that every time I make a bad movie, no one will see it. My main goal is to entertain the audience. I do not differentiate between a multiplex and a single screen [the audience]. There are certain expectations when people come to see my film and I do not want to mislead my audience. being complacent, I will take a step back, or it will result in a bad job. It happened in the past. I improvise when I participate in live events and I have not been able to catch up on enough rehearsals. I am good for live interactions and it helps to distract me from my performances. When I do not like something on the set, I stir and annoy my directors. Sometimes I trouble my father and, in return, he abuses my hell [laughs]. I can do it with Shashank [Khaitan] and Remo [D’Souza] because we are friends.
During the interview, he was also asked about his last two films in October and Sui Dhaaga – Made In India at the box office, specified Varun,
. ] I am aware that the films did not work in relation to my other projects, but I am aware that this has affected the audience. The fact that you talk about these films makes me feel satisfied. I still earn the royalty on this movie thanks to people's praise. I am grateful that the characters that require such intensity have come to meet me.
As for the box office of Kalank the film did crore Rs 44.65 three days after its release. The budget of the film is 150 crores.
