  • Karnataka declared a holiday Monday and will observe the national mourning for the next three days to pay tribute to the playwright winner of Jnanpith, Girish Karnad who died early this morning.

    The last sacraments of Karnad will be celebrated with all honors, said Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy in a statement. "Karnad will receive the same honors from the government as the other winners of the Jnanpith Award," he said.

    During national mourning, the national flag will be placed at half mast at the top of all government buildings and there will be no official entertainment program.
