BENGALURU / NEW DELHI: The Cauvery Water Management Authority ordered Monday in Karnataka to release 31.24 mt of water to Tamil Nadu for the month of July.

"The authority ordered Karnataka to balance the amount of water for July, adjusting the amount of excess water made by Tamil Nadu in June, subject to the 39; badessment and recommendations of the regulatory committee, "said Masood Hussain, chairman of the Cauvery Water Management Authority, after his first meeting.

He said that the meeting urged Karnataka to release water from Cauvery according to the decision of the Supreme Court, and it was decided that the existing arrangement for the water supply of Puducherry by Tamil Nadu will continue.

Earlier, representatives of Karnataka – Rakesh Singh, senior secretary of the water resources department and HL Prasanna Kumar, chief executive of Cauvery Neeravari Nigam – said that Karnataka had dumped water in June. Tamil Nadu demanded the quota for July – 34 tmcft.

Karnataka Water Resources Minister DK Shivakumar told TOI that the state would abide by the decision.

Expressing his support for the government in the Cauvery affair, the BJP stated that Karnataka must have a standing technical committee to badist both state representatives in meetings conducted by the authority and the committee.

Basavaraj Bommai, former Minister of Water Resources and BJP MLA, pointed out that this would help the state to make a "strong case" in this case.

The Cauvery authority considered asking the Central Water Commission to submit a proposal to set up a communication network to badess the hydrological conditions, added Mr. Hussain, adding that the meeting was held in a very cordial atmosphere.

The participants – representatives of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Puducherry – also discussed the authority's budget and the question of the establishment of its permanent office.

The Center had, on June 1, formed the Cauvery Water Management Authority to settle the dispute over the sharing of river waters between Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry.

The Karnataka government decided on June 30 to appeal to the Supreme Court against the creation of authority.
