Do you think comedy has become your comfort zone? Have you been limited to comedies like "Pyaar Ka Punchnama", "Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety" ("SKTKS") and even "Luka Chuppi"?
I like a lot of thrillers and serious movies. Stories like "Baazigar" and "Darr" attract me because they are intriguing. But comedy has become my default business card. It's not something I decided to do, and I did not plan it. I loved thrillers, I was offered comedies, but I wanted to work in romantic movies (laughs!). Honestly, I think I can work in any genre. At the moment, comedy may occupy me, but my choices are gradually moving towards romance.
Is it difficult to break with stereotypes? Do you feel creatively chained when you come up with comic movies?
Nowadays, it's easy to break the clutter. With the large number of opportunities and the kind of stories that people write for movies, an actor has a lot of choices. If your previous success is a comedy, the essential roles and movies that will follow you will be comic. But that does not mean that other genres will not be offered to you. What you choose is yours. How is the role of Luka Chuppi and your character different?
We tried to make a movie based on the comedy concept of mistakes, the kind of humor that people used to see in Manmohan. The films of Desai. For me, the competition is to improve and opt for better roles than my last film. I do not choose films or projects based on what my peers do. This can be detrimental to an actor's career. It took me seven long years to get to where I am today and that is why I weighed my options very carefully. I appreciate what I have accomplished and I have the feeling that I still have a long way to go. I think it's a realistic approach to my career. I can not think retrospectively and say, "Look how far I am." If I start feeling "Oh look, I've accomplished so much," I'm going to end my career here and there. My priorities are defined and I know where I want to be and what I will need to get there. I love healthy competitions where the talent of my peers inspires me to improve my skills and my choices. There are so many directors, scripts and chances there. An actor will not shoot 10 movies a year, which means there are many opportunities for all. I am just happy to have so many options to choose from.
With the recent spotlight on your career following the success of SKTKS, do you feel that there has been a change in the way people perceive you, both in the world and in the world? industry and outside?
I always wake up. days astonished and shocked, wondering if it really happened to me. Sometimes I want to pinch myself and wake up from the dream. I have always lived with the fear that the person I am going to meet does not recognize me. In the last seven years, I have met so many people who do not know my name so instinctively, when I meet people, I want to tell them who I am and what I have done in the past. Even after the success of SKTKS, I was prepared for the fact that there would be people who might not have watched my movie and who would not know who I am. But slowly and regularly, I realize that people know who I am and want to cover me with attention and love. That said, I also live in fear of losing glory and adulation.
Insecurity can also affect an actor's career …
I know it's not good, but it's a fight I have to face and win. The only way for me to triumph over this is to work on my job and make sure I do not take anything for granted. I will work hard on every little aspect of my career and make sure to keep a cool head. I am grateful for the status that SKTKS has given me. That had escaped me for seven years and I am really happy to have this opportunity now.
Not so long ago, there was speculation that you had refused offers from big producers and that this success made you too confident. How true is it and how do you react to such stories?
I said "no" to movies while sitting on two back-to-back chess. It's not a matter of pride or something that I just took in my career. This process was part of my professional life, even before I signed my first film. When I was new or had two failures, I did not have too many good options. But, I used my discretion to choose what was best for me. It's now that people will judge me. I have a lot of good deals to choose from and, depending on my choices, people will be able to judge whether I'm doing the right things or not. I am open to the idea of being judged and criticized, but the idea of saying "no" to movies is related to my instinct. I've always worked on instinct. I do not have a billboard to weigh my options and help me make decisions. I do not know anyone to whom I can tell the storyline and take his opinion about whether or not I'm in the role. I've always been alone during the difficult decision-making process and if it had worked in my favor up to now, why would I want to change it? I only refuse a film if I do not feel confident about it.
The film industry may have a lot of fragile ego. So we think that an actor must learn to be tactful while refusing a film …
I answer "no" to many offers and I could probably refuse other films in the future. An actor can not say "yes" to all the movies that come to him. Of course, you have to learn to decline an offer (smiles). It's something that I try to cultivate within myself, and I'm sure that as time goes by, I will discover the art of saying "no".
The episode with Sara Ali Khan sparked a lot of speculation. Since she commented on seeing you on the Karan Johar show, people have not stopped talking about you two. What is feeding this fire?
Guess! Hmmm … (laughs!) It's as if a movie on social networks is played over the days. People can not stop talking. One day, they talk about what Sara said the other day, the conversation turned to something I said and I blushed. The next day, she said something more. The story only continues. Honestly, there is no real answer to this question because nothing is happening. I feel flattered by what Sara said on the Karan show and I posted my answer on the same show. I guess this movie will continue to play until people are interested in it.
Your couple status has also been the subject of much debate. Besides the link with Sara, you were also seen with Ananya Panday (who debuted in Bollywood with Student of the Year 2). How do you pay so much attention to your privacy?
I really do not know where all this is going. Everyone wants to know what's going on in my private life. All this attention is really embarrbading for me. I do not have an answer when someone asks me who I am going out with. Because this question is asked by the media on a public forum. I am not someone who wants to discuss my private life openly, let alone make statements about it.
Does the constant icing of social media add to the pressure of celebrity?
Social media has changed the game so much. We, the actors, are always outside. There is absolutely no exclusivity. Woh star wali feeling, woh elusive nature of glamorous abb khatam sa ho gaya hai. At present, even a Bollywood star is on the same platform as a regular Twitter user. They both have the same voice and address millions of people at the same time. We live in a world of equals and that's why I feel that celebrity actors like Amitabhji, Shah Rukh, Salman or Akshay will never come back.
