Katrina Kaif on big budget movies that fail at the box office: "There is no trend, make a good movie with any actor and it will work" | Bollywood

After a rather thin phase, Katrina Kaif finally has reasons to rejoice as her latest film, Bharat, has held up well at the box office. The actor is not disappointed despite two consecutive failures last year – Zero and Thugs of Hindostan – because she believes in the ability to count on her blessings and progress gracefully. She talks about Bharat's success and how this experience changed her role choices. Extracts:

What do you think of the reactions that await you for Bharat?
I appreciate your comments as they help me get better. The validation is great. A film is a collaborative effort and there is so much going on in a character – not just the person who is playing the role, but the person who wrote it, the entourage behind the director, which helps to make it stand out.

You worked with Salman Khan on several projects. Is it different each time you collaborate?
I do not carry any luggage when I go on the set – which is my co-star, how many movies we made together and anything else. We must continue to offer the public a new experience. I am very aware of that, especially now.

At this point in your career, is it easy for you to refuse roles? ? Yes, after working for so many years. When I started, I had a very clear vision of the type of work I wanted to do and the person I wanted to be on the screen. I was lucky to have checked a lot of these boxes. With time, you become a little different person. You evolve – what you feel, what you believe, what attracts you or what interests you – it changes. Now, I instinctively answer where I'm going to be challenged and where I'm going to learn something.

Many great movies have not not quite successful these last months, but I do not badyze them. We always want to find a generic answer, one size fits all. Each film is a unique experience of two and a half hours. You just have to make a good story, and the movie will work. There is no trend. If you make a good movie with any actor – whether it's young, new, old or well established, it will work.

Do you believe this is one of the most rewarding phases of your career?
Since my third film, Namastey London (2007), I have played an important role. Then comes Rajneeti (2010), after which I played the most beautifully layered character of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011). I had fantastic opportunities. Can you go further? Of course. I have so much time to do it.

Your role in Zero was praised, but the film was hailed at box office. Was it a difficult situation?
You feel very bad because we have all worked a lot. The film has made enormous efforts, so you feel the weight. But on a different note, Zero has given me so much. As an actor, it has brought me the maximum of love that I have received so far. It was a wonderful and creative experience.
