Oh, Keanu. How we love you, how the world loves you. But that was not always the case.
Early in his career, Keanu Reeves was considered a joke. This is because his taste has always evolved enormously between safe bets and huge risks.
Keanu always wanted to stretch. Unfortunately, he sometimes pulls a muscle in the process. Yet he has always rebounded. Most stars would consider themselves lucky to have a second mouthful of cherry after a series of flops – Keanu did it again and again and now, in 2019, it seems like it's not going to happen again. has never been so loved.
So, how did he do it? Let's take a look at the history up to now.
The Range
People started talking about the beginning of his career at Keanu. River's Edge was just his second film, and he largely explains why we still remember this movie today. It's a brilliant performance, which has marked the actor as an exciting dramatic presence.
More indies followed, his first role in the studio being a serious turning point in the role of Stephen Frears Dangerous Liaisons. But it was not his biggest success of the decade. It was a film that showed that his charisma and sense of comic timing were too strong to stay true to dramaturgy.
The excellent adventure of Bill & Ted was like a cinematic viral meme, bringing electric guitar mimes and great slogans to playgrounds around the world.
That should have made him a comedy star, but Keanu had not finished experimenting the genre. Point Break marks his first foray into (perfect) action. My Own Private Idaho is a another example of its dramatic power, and .] Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey was a non-fictional sequel: all of this combined to create what would be a record year for any performer The following year was one of his worst.
Dracula of Bram Stoker Much noise for nothing and The little Buddha looked good on paper and saw Keanu working with three of the greatest directors of his career so far. It's a pity that none of them knew how to get the best of the actor.
Keanu became a joke, scoffed at his attempt at British accent and the perception that he was above his weight became commonplace – surf guys should not do Shakespeare. He became a talk show punchline.
The following year was hardly better: three other films, including two failures – Freaked (directed by his friend Bill and Ted Alex Winter) and Even The Cowgirls Get The Blues (for Gus Van Sant) both lost money, both received the rotten note Alone Poetic Justice played this year- there, a movie in which Keanu had an uncredited cameo as "Homeless Man".
Transform
It was clear that he needed a step back, with a serious career. downward trajectory. He did it by reducing his goal, by only making one movie in 1994 and taking a genre on the left. Fortunately, this dice roll was Speed one of the best action movies ever made. Keanu physically transformed, enlarging and reframing his signature silky curls for the role, which seemed perfectly suited to his characteristic dry performance.
Bafflingly followed this success with another year terrible; Johnny Mnemonic and A Walk in the Clouds ] were both named for the award for "Best Actor" Razzies and did not set fire at the box office. He refused Heat in 1995 and did Chain Reaction in 1996.
Again, it looked like his career was in free fall, but the word was that it was wooden, on stilts, like a hottie without chops.
Take the red pill
So he realized The Matrix on which you did not need to tell us about it [1965] 9002] This pattern of economic crisis seems to be constant for Keanu. Go to 2013 and to The Tai Chi Man and 47 Ronin . The first was his directorial debut (reasonably well received), the second was such a disaster that he put Universal in the red for the year.
Again in crisis, it makes the following year John Wick who launches the franchise Keanu kept and guided to a incredibly successful third installment, and has received some of the best critics of his career.
This tenacity – and his ability to constantly surprise – have undoubtedly contributed to his current resurgence.Keanu himself does not have to be underestimated, whether in a period of failure or success, the star has remained remarkably humble – he just looks like a very thoughtful and kind guy. people want that he goes well – public and studios.
And he is more popular than ever in 201 9, with the J aforesaid of John Wick 3 a charming and self-paroding role in of Netflix, always be my maybe and a turning apparemmen t in Toy Story 4.
Following the usual pattern, we should worry about 2020, of course. But with the positive buzz around Bill & Ted's Face The Music (expect a trailer soon), combined with a video game appearance in Cyberpunk 2077 – a consistencies of Keanu's career is that he really likes cyberpunk – announced at E3 with huge enthusiasm, he should hopefully go.
But even if both projects are terrible and fail horribly, we will not care.
We love Keanu. The world loves Keanu. And that will always be the case.
