Kulbhushan Jadhav case: Pakistan claims that the conviction of the Indian "spy" at the ICJ is "very strong"

Islamabad: Pakistan declared on Thursday that its case was "very strong" at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the conviction of Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav who was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court for espionage and terrorism

India had moved the ICJ in May last year after Jadhav, 48, was sentenced to death.

A 10-member court of the ICJ on May 18, 2017 had prevented Pakistan from executing Jadhav until adjudication of the case.

In its pleadings, India had accused Pakistan of violating the Vienna Convention by not granting consular access to Jadhav, arguing that the Convention did not say that such access would not be accessible to an individual arrested for spying.

Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Faisal said in his weekly briefing that the conclusions of both parties to the ICJ had been completed and that the formal hearing would begin.

His comments came two days after the filing of his second written response to India's arguments. The ICJ in the case

However, India contends that Jadhav was kidnapped from Iran where he had commercial interests after his retirement from the Navy. Speaking of Kashmir, he said the report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights had "greatly upset India's efforts to project that everything was fine" in Kashmir.
