. do you think it worked for De Pyaar De?
What has worked for most films in the past two or three years is a different and new concept. When the poster, the teaser and the trailer came out, everyone thought that the movie was about a man cheating on his wife, or an older woman and a woman. younger woman, or even a triangle, but once people went to see the movie, they realized that it is not all that. It's a family movie. It's a film about a separate man for 18 years, so there's no girl or old woman. They are not in a relationship. New story with a dose of entertainment, and it's not just entertainment, we sent home some subtle messages without being preached
And one of the biggest stars in the country is playing his age , which had never happened before. He says it coldly. There are so many people aged 50 and 60 who have loot that it is not necessary to be 35 years old to have one.
This is your first production with a big star.
The idea is not just to work with a star. If it's a 50-year-old character, you can not choose a newcomer. Why did not you lead it yourself?
I am a prolific writer, but a lazy director. I can not run every year consecutively. This is not something that comes naturally to me. I am very fond of filmmakers who can do it. The members of my staff who work with me are so talented that they all aspire to become directors and they are all capable. This is the main reason why I did not want to direct the film. Akiv Ali, who edited my four films, realized it. After writing the movie, I thought that Ajay was the best choice to play the lead role. I've talked with Ajay and I convinced him to do it.

When he shot the movie, Ajay knew he was venturing into unknown territory. It's a very little movie Ajay Devgn; he did a rom-com after a very long time. The last film that comes to my mind is Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha (1998) . He is a very realistic and practical man, he is a producer himself. He knows that it is not a Golmaal or Singham . It's a film that will take off slowly. Everyone knew he would not have that kind of openness. But the joy is that if it opens to a certain number but if it doubles, or multiplies by 1.5 the next day, it reaffirms to a certain level your conviction. This confirms that you did a good job with the movie. The numbers are very delicate. If a film like this one makes a number, it represents a bigger victory than another one that makes it bigger because it happens anyway.
Ajay is pleased with the results achieved by the film at the box office. The most important thing for any filmmaker or actor is the acceptance of the film and the fact that he has such a big word of mouth. This is a very smart actor. In this film, he wanted to try something different. There is no point trying something different and always wanting to address the same audience. This is one of Ajay's safest performances I have ever seen. He made it so simple, so cool, so sweet. It's his simplicity, he's a very down-to-earth person.

In your films, you have always been criticized for its badism and its pejorative character.
If the same film was shot by another filmmaker, no one will find anything badist in the film. Age is the concept of the film. If you find yourself one day in this situation, you will end up joking about age, you can not be politically correct all the time. If it is the story of a 50-year-old man and a 26-year-old girl, it is the age that will come into play. Are you or someone tells me that this age will never be discussed? This is the plot of the film.
Moreover, I never understood it (accusations) because I never did it with that intention. I said it and repeated that my filmography is very small and that you choose to focus on one side of the filmography simply because it is the films that have worked. I also realized Akaash Vani which no one cares to talk about. I can not really do anything the way people want to see it. If people want to find something negative, they do it anyway. People often have these preconceived ideas about film and are not able to make them forget it.
How do you react to criticism?
I am not a big reader of critics. I learned this after my first film itself: do not take them too seriously. I make a movie, people like it or they do not like it and that 's what counts eventually. Beyond one point, critics do not interest me because film criticism in India is a very delicate thing. Very few understand it but many people write it. Some magazines end up reviewing everything except the movie. Critics are hijacked by emotions, people, politics, their likes and dislikes for you and in doing so, they do not come back on the film, but on you.
Your success rate up to now is good. Can we say that you have good contacts with the public?
It's not my contact with the public, it's the contact of history with the public. But I would like to believe that I am especially clear about the target audience of the film. I'm not trying to make a movie for everyone because there are sometimes stories that can not be made for everyone. As long as you know the target audience, your work is a little easier.
Tell us about your upcoming directorial project with Ajay Devgn and Ranbir Kapoor.
(laughs). We start rolling in November-December and the release is scheduled for Christmas 2020. We have not decided yet to lead the female lead. I've always loved Ranbir as an actor and he agreed to be part of it immediately.
