The Madras High Court on Tuesday banned monetizing the songs of renowned music composer Ilaiyaraja through reality TV shows, live music, and online radio channels, among other things, without his prior permission.

Judge Anita Sumanth issued an order for a civil action brought by Ilaiyaraja, alleging copyright infringement by Agi Music, Echo Recording, Giri Trading Company and a few others.

The court had previously made an interim order in favor of the music composer and confirmed it on Tuesday.

Sumanth J. stated that the songs composed by the musician can not be exploited or monetized in any manner whatsoever without his prior authorization.

However, films featuring songs composed by Ilaiyaraja, released in theaters and screened in theaters, are excluded from the order.

Ilaiyaraja filed a lawsuit in 2014 against record companies and others for allegedly violating his copyright on songs composed by him.

He argued that businesses were not only violating his rights, but also monetizing his songs.

Ilaiyaraaja stated that he had composed a large number of songs during his forty-year career, during which he had acquired the reputation of being the only one to have composed music for more than 1,000 films.

The court dismissed a separate complaint filed by Agi Music in 2013, accusing Ilaiyaraaja of violating the terms of an agreement with her.
