Sonam Wangchuk, a 51-year-old educational reformer from Ladakh, widely regarded as the inspiration of the character of Aamir Khan, Phunsuk Wangdu in the movie "3 Idiots", is the One of the two Indian nominees for the 2018 Ramon Magsaysay Awards.

The other is Bharat Vatwani, a psychiatrist who works for the sick of the streets in Mumbai. Wangchuk and Vatwani are among the six prize winners who "celebrate greatness of spirit and transformative leadership in Asia". The others are Youk Chhang from Cambodia, Maria from Lourdes Martins Cruz from East Timor, Howard Dee from the Philippines and Vo Thi Hoang Yen from Vietnam.

Wangchuk was a 19-year engineering student at the Srinagar National Institute of Technology, when he took tutoring. He helped unprepared students to pbad the national college entrance exams.

Ladakh Movement

In 1988, after graduating from engineering school, Wangchuk founded the Ladakh Students' Educational and Cultural Movement to train Ladakhi students, 95% of whom failed government examinations. In 1994, with him in mind, the New Hope operation was launched to consolidate the program. Vatwani was recognized for "his immense courage and compbadion for healing" by embracing poor people with mental disorders.
