The Maldivian government has strongly denied media reports that India has offered $ 1 billion to the Maldives in exchange for the deployment of Indian troops.

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid said the Maldives territory would not be used for the establishment of foreign military bases.

Engaging on Twitter, Mr. Shahid said: "categorically refute the information in the media. This government plans to authorize the establishment of an Indian military base in the Maldives in exchange for financial badistance or other material benefits. It is baseless and aims to discredit the government as it begins to restore good relations with its neighbors and the rest of the international community

"The government badures the population that it will always act in the national interest of the Maldives and will not undertake an international commitment that will compromise the sovereignty and independence of the country," he added.

Mr. Shahid reacted to a newspaper article published in the Japanese daily NIKKIE Asian Review, according to which India offered the Maldives a billion dollars in exchange

Abdulla Shahid recently paid an official visit in New Delhi, where he met influential figures, including his counterpart Sushma Swaraj and Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

He described India as a trusted and experienced partner. He is committed to strengthening bilateral trade relations between the two countries.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, however, indicated that his country would work closely with all of its neighbors and with the international community. He also called China as a friend and one of the largest economies in the world whose badistance had benefited the Maldives.

President of the Maldive News, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, is scheduled to visit India on December 17, in accordance with his "India-Premier" policy.
