Tenzin Mariko, a former Buddhist monk, became viral on the Internet to become the first transgender model in Tibet. Tenzin, born a male, was one of six brothers and his family arrived in India in the 1990s to settle in Bir, Himachal Pradesh, reported on Times of India .

In 2015, she was operated on and made her first public appearance as a dancer at the Miss Tibet show in Dharamshala.

She has never looked back.

Tenzin is now very much followed by social media and has inspired many transgender people in his country and India to follow their dreams.

"Our Tibetan community is small, but it does treat me as a celebrity, it's good to be known as the first Tibetan transgender, not because it turned me into a celebrity, but because I have, to a certain extent, made communication with other people easier, "said Tenzin
