Model Halima Aden wore a hijab and burkini for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue
The American-Somali model Halima Aden made history by becoming the first model to wear the hijab and burkini for the number Sports Illustrated magazine swimsuit. The next May issue of the magazine features the 21-year-old model, wearing a burkini (full swimsuit) and a hijab. This is particularly significant for a magazine that for decades has chosen models dressed in bikinis for its famous swimwear numbers, reports the New York Times.

Halima Aden explained how much the photoshoot mattered to her in an interview with Sports Illustrated . "Growing up in the States, I never felt represented, because I could never flip through a magazine and see a girl wearing a hijab," she said.
Born in Kenya, where she lived in a refugee camp, Aden moved to Minnesota at the age of seven. In 2016, she became the first participant to wear a hijab at the Miss Minnesota USA contest.
"I still think of myself, six years old, living in a refugee camp," Mrs. Aden. said during his shoot, according to Sports Illustrated. "So, growing up to live the American dream and come back to Kenya and shoot for IS in the most beautiful parts of Kenya – I do not think it's a story anyone can invent."
Good Morning America, she succinctly summarized why her photoshoot on the hijab and burkini made headlines around the world and is considered an important step in the right direction. "Sports Illustrated proves that a girl who wears a bikini could be next to a girl who wears a burkini. And as women, we can rub shoulders and be the biggest cheerleaders in the world."
