The decision was made after members of the Independent Review Panel, established by NASA to evaluate the progress of the telescope, recommended to the 39 unanimously that this development continues. The IRB cited technical problems, including human errors, as factors that influenced the development schedule.
NASA supports the evaluation and advice of the review committee. Trustee Jim Bridenstine said that despite the major challenges, the IRB and the US Space Agency agree that the telescope will achieve mission success when recommendations from the board will be implemented.
The new launch date is adapted to environmental changes and performance problems at work. Northrop Grumman, the main contractor of the spacecraft, faces technical challenges on the sun visor and the propulsion system of the observatory.
The new life cycle of the telescope now stands at $ 9.66 billion. The cost of new development, on the other hand, is estimated at $ 8.8 billion.
