Neena Gupta, the actor who challenged all the norms to play a pregnant housewife in Badhaai Ho, is ready to conquer the heart with new performances. With a career of 38 years, Neena remains important and irreplaceable even today. The actor has not only rebounded with tailor-made roles, but thirsts for more stimulating proposals. The actor spoke exclusively to Hindustan Times about his desire to play a role of action, his motherhood and his next film with Kangana Ranaut. Extracts:

Was it fun to shoot with a baby hump on trays of Badhaai Ho?

I had a lot of fun working on the film because the combination of actors, directors, and units was amazing. Ayushmann (Khurrana) has a great sense of humor. We used to laugh at ourselves and really have fun while filming.

You have your due in the film industry?

Contributions start to be paid, but it will take a while longer. There are many things in me that have yet to come out.

Neena Gupta and her co-stars on the Badhaai Ho plateaux.

You all take that for a close-haired step-daughter in Badhaai Ho. Would you have done the same thing in real life?

That's the reality. most of our women do the same thing. About 85 to 90 percent of Indian women are like that. You and I are the minority of 1%. It's very natural, you do not know what to do if you're married.

You played the role of Sonam Kapoor's mother in Veere Di Wedding, who was still worried about her marriage when she was doing well in her profession. Are you the same in real life?

Yes. Like all mothers, I will also worry about my daughter for everything. It's in my DNA. Even when she turns 40, I would worry about her. It's normal.

Did you play Kunti in Mama's Boys and a middle-aged woman in Khujli? Do you think that middle-aged actors get the job they deserve? Are you open to experimentation?

Absolutely, everything that fascinates me. I did not stop smoking, I did not do a very good job. I think the time has come when things are changing. More and more good roles are preparing for my age. I hope to do a good job now.

Is there anything on your wish list?

I want to do comedy and play a role. I want to play the main head again.

Are you ready to play a negative role?

No, I am not.

Neena Gupta with Kanwaljit Singh in a Saans still.

If you are asked about your personal preferences, what kind of role do you prefer most – your role in Veere Di Wedding, Badhaai Ho or Saans?

I think Saans, because he had a lot of nuances. There were lighter moments, moments of emotion, serious and delicate moments.

Have you ever felt attached to any role?

As an actor, I'm prepared for every role, it's my job. My job is to change myself according to my role and I work hard on it. It's not that I look like the character in real life to be able to play that role. I've also played various roles on television.

Have you noticed a major change in the industry since your inception 38 years ago?

It has changed a lot. Things have become more professional. People arrive at the hour and all the actors are very disciplined. The younger generation is working very hard.

Have you noticed any of your co-stars who could go far in their career

Ayushmann has already gone very far in his career, it's a good guy. Sanya Malhotra also has a lot in it. She is a dancer, a good actor and is very nice. She is very kind and a very kind person. I think she'll go far.

Neena Gupta with her daughter Masaba Gupta.

As happens between mothers and daughters, does Masaba Gupta influence your sense of fashion? Do you also exchange career advice?

We are a very normal mother and daughter. We advise most of the time. But are we ourselves and do we decide what we want to do ourselves? But we are always open to everyone's thoughts.
