The basic plot, very thin like a slice, is reminiscent of the boilers of the 80s and it is the distribution and conflict between the main characters that are like chalk and cheese around which the director Rajesh creates a plot. Manohar (Sivakarthikeyan) is a young middle-clbad man who works in a car showroom. His life is entirely devoted to friends (Sathish and Yogi Babu), a beloved mother (Radhika) and a sister (Harija).
Manohar meets Dr. Keerthana Vasudevan (Nayanthara) of KV Entertainment in a minor accident and hates himself. It's their rivalry and their struggles that make the film appealing. Slowly, Manohar falls in love with Keerthana, but the latter thinks that the romantic angle is a family ploy of the first to defraud her money. Can Manohar win the heart of Keerthana, inflexible and obstinate?
The film has its ups and downs; The thin plot really tests your patience because there is not much happening on the screen. The highlight in Paris involving Narayan Lucky is too manipulative and lazily written. But what works in favor of the film is the comic treatment. Unlike Rajesh's recent films, this one scores points in the comedy department.
Sivakarthikeyan is indeed the biggest strength of the film and it's his show all along. Whether it's action, comedy or dance, it's all the attraction of the artist in him. Nayanthara is perfect as Keerthana and she shines. Of the three comedians, Sathish is the best. Robo Shankar is good but Yogi Babu does not manage to evoke laughter and is there just for the sake of being there!
Except Takkunu Takkunu none of the songs of Hiphop Tamizha remain in your mind and its basic score is below average. Dinesh Krishnan provided colorful visuals and the editor Vivek Harshan did a neat job.
Overall, Mr. Local could please Sivakarthikeyan lovers and blind comedies!
