NEW DELHI: Mountaineer Bachendri Pal on Friday received Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian honor in India, while Gautam Gambhir, Bajrang Punia and Sunil Chhetri, among others, received the Padma Shri.

The government announces the names of the 2018 Padma Award winners on the eve of the 70th anniversary of Republic Day.

This legendary mountaineer of 64, who became the first Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1984, was honored for "his distinguished service of a high order".

Bajrang is a silver and bronze medalist at the world championships, in addition to winning the gold medal at the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

Last year, Bajrang became furious when he was not selected for the prestigious Khel Ratna Award. Cricket player Virat Kohli and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu have been recommended for the country's highest sporting award.

This year the government awarded the Padma Prize to 112 people – 4 Padma Vibushan, 14 Padma Bhushan and 94 Padma Shri.
