Pankaj Tripathi: I started feeling the pressure of not wanting to disappoint people

[ad_1]

Pankaj Tripathi has become, for Hindi movies, what the potato is among vegetables, an incredible performance after the other. You can combine it at will, but it will still steal the show.

Awaiting the release of his next film Luka Chuppi the 42-year-old is turning to a very eventful year 2019. Here he discusses movies, favorite actors, the pressure that comes from being loved, the rise of India in small towns in Hindi cinema and more.

Seven films in 2017, eight films and two webseries in 2018, you are everywhere. How do you feel about being one of the most sought after actors in Bollywood today?
Achha lagta hai. But all my 2019 is blocked. There are many good stories, movies that are made this year and that I want to be part of but can not. It took me a long time – 15 years – to get here.

I think my career motivates other actors. Many of them trying to find their way here in Bombay tell me that they really feel inspired by my positivity and my struggle, that I give them faith. Ki agar aapme baat hai to ruke raho, zaroor hoga. I think this is my biggest achievement.

How did it work with young actors – Kriti Sanon, Kartik Aaryan and Aparshakti Khurana – in Luka Chuppi? Do you find their work styles and their approach to business different from yours?
All these young actors are very sincere and hardworking. Luka Chuppi also has five or six other brilliant actors who will be seen for the first time in good fleshy roles. The process of making a movie has changed a lot. This is the perfect time for young film talent, be it actors, directors or anyone.

What do you think was the turning point in your career? Which films do you think changed the game?
The gangs of Wbadeypur (2012) were named, Newton (2017), and expanded. Mirzapur (2018) is badured that I was everywhere. Baap re baap! I did not think I would ever be called Kaaleen Bhaiya (the name of his character in the Amazon Web series)! People from all over the world (United Kingdom, United States) send me texts for Kaleen Bhaiya.

Your struggle has been long and difficult. Now that you are able to choose your projects, what kind of movies and shows do you want to do?
Jo kahani samajh me aa jaye, achhi lag jaye. I like some directors with whom I want to work. For example, Anurag Basu and Kabir Khan. And I work with them now. Every year, I work with three or four new directors. Like Luka Chuppi – this is the first film of Laxman (Utekar, director). New talent has a different perspective on storytelling. I also want to work with them.

Many actors become directors and producers. Do you also plan to diversify?
I can not tell you about the future, but I have no plans for the moment. I may wish to lead a little later, but nothing is on the cards yet.

There was a time when most Hindi films were based in Mumbai. Then Delhi became fashionable. Now, it is India small town. What do you think of Bollywood's current obsession with making movies in the interior of the Indian country?
Because many of these storytellers come from small towns. If you look, the directors were previously mainly from Bombay. Now they come from everywhere. A Kashyap Anurag comes from elsewhere, just like an Imtiaz Ali or a Tigmanshu Dhulia.

More and more people – writers, directors – from small Indian cities are getting into film. It was those who went to Bijnor and Belanki to visit their grandmothers during the holidays. As a result, we are seeing more stories of this type now.

Do not you think it's the same for the actors?
Absolutely. Look at me, I am a living example. Forget a small town, I come from an indeterminate village.

How important are movie promotions? Do you think that a line needs to be traced? How much is too much?
We must absolutely define limits, as in the South, because the public can feel a good movie. AndhaDhun promotion of ka koi and hadhad nahi hua lekin and zhadoor hua trade. We can talk as much as we want about our film in all the humorous series, the audience will know it, but he will only come to watch it if he discovers that it is a good film and that it happens only after movie release. . It is the public who must promote a film.

Do you think actors should be paid according to their contribution in a film and not their celebrity?
Ye bazaarwaad hai. In capitalism, your brand image – whatever your size – replaces your movie. But what we often forget in capitalism is that cinema is an art and not a business. However, I do not have any opinion on this subject. I was paid less early, it is now decent.

But you are contributing significantly to your projects now. People badociate you with good movies.
Haan, logo ka bharosa ban gaya hai. Chinta bhi hoti hai. I started feeling the pressure of not wanting to disappoint people. That's why, with every project, I try to get the message across while entertaining the audience. When more and more people love you and value you, your responsibility increases: you do not have to do anything wrong and perform well every time.

An actor in Bollywood whose work is ambitious?
I do not look at Bollywood movies at all. The last one I watched was Rubaru Roshni from Aamir Khan. But I watch independent regional films.

I do not have that kind of time. On 365 days a year, I shoot 300 days. After 60 days, I'm doubling or traveling. But since the time I watched a lot of movies, I really like the work of Irrfan Khan, Pankaj Kapur and Om Puri.

Are you friends with someone in the industry? What is your favorite character in Bollywood?
Richa Chadha, Ali Fazal, All Boys Fukrey . Although we do not meet too often, I also share links with Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Vikrant Mbadey is also a very close friend.

If a remake had to be done, which character would you like to recreate?
I would like to play the role of Raj Kapoor in Teesri Kasam . I really like the writer Phanishwarnath Renu on the new that is behind the film.

Tell a little about your character to Luka Chuppi?
It's very interesting. This is a single real estate broker looking for his future wife throughout the movie. He is naughty and humorous. You will find it irritating but also sweet.

Kartik Aaryan, Kriti Sanon and Pankaj Tripathi, Luka Chuppi is scheduled for March 1st.
