Film Name: Photography
Actor: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Sanya Malhotra
Director: Ritesh Batra
Six years after the success of The Lunchbox, Ritesh Batra is back with the photographer, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra. Keeping the tone of his previous films such as The Meaning of an End and Our Night Souls, Photograph has a similar, calm and nostalgic tendency, which leaves something to think about in the end. The film speaks the most in its quietest moments and lets you understand what you hear.
The photograph shows the unexpected love story between a street photographer and a rather reserved student of opposing social worlds. Rafi (Nawaz) meets Miloni (Sanya) at the Gateway of India, while performing his daily tasks. He insists that she should take a picture saying that whenever she looks at her, she will remember the sun touching her face and wind in her hair. Miloni decides to have her picture taken, but she goes away without paying. They do not yet know the name of the other.
So, when Rafi's grandmother insists that he finds a girl for himself, he tells her that he ignores her. And he calls her Noori, after hearing the song Noori. Her grandmother rushes into town and wants to meet the girl. Rafi stalks Miloni and asks him to take part in this trick and it forces surprisingly. In doing so, she finds herself less privileged and comfortable than her own. Ironically, she is happier.
Thus, a hesitant friendship and a story of unspoken love mingle. They found themselves in a world that never understood their hopes and their emotions.
Miloni and Rafi are polar opposites in every respect. So what brings them together? It's the beauty of Batra's cinema. He does not want to show you what binds them. He wants to show you where it can go, or if it can go anywhere. We are so conditioned by films that we believe in happy ending and fairytale romance. You are almost tempted to wish for a more explosive emotion between the two.
It is here that Batra confronts you with reality and asks you if we are really free to love what we want in a divided world. by clbad barriers?
You need patience with Photograph. It takes a while to become familiar with the plaintive world of Batra and the pace is a little scary in points. His ideas are wonderful but his insistence on giving the film a discreet touch can leave you rather disappointed. Although our main couple communicates with glances and words spared, you are not quite convinced that these two people are soul mates.
As for the acting game, there are not many complaints. Nawaz is as always a treat to watch and its silences say a lot. Sanya is openly constrained at first, but defends himself in the middle of the film. Farrukh Jaffar, who plays the role of the crazy grandmother, is amusing both because she is both comic and comic, and provides wisdom in the film.
Photography starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra trying to embody the theme of longevity. our nostalgia and leaves you rather nostalgic in the end, says our movie critic. This is not everyone's cup of tea. 3/5 for Photograph.
